When any part of that chain fails, the water goes somewhere it should not. The fascia carries the guttering and closes off the rafter ends. The soffit seals the underside of the overhang while allowing ventilation into the loft. The gutter catches the run-off and takes it to a downpipe and away. Boards are fixed into sound rafter ends with the correct fixings, with joints and corners trimmed properly rather than filled.
